What's in a cigarette?

Jar of Tar
  • The three main active chemicals in a cigarette are nicotine (highly addictive) carbon monoxide (deadly toxic) and tar (sticky brown mix of chemicals).
  • By comparison, some of the lesser toxins are hydrogen cyanine, embalming fluid and rat poison.
  • Cigarettes also contain around 60 known carcinogens.
Warning Signs

A paper tube stuffed with chopped up leaves. Where's the harm in that?

Cigarettes look deceptively simple and harmless, but it's what you can't see that does the harm, 4000 chemicals including many toxins.

Every chemical has a specific job; a few occur naturally in the tobacco plant, others such as pesticides and fertilisers are added during the growing process. The majority are added in the final production stages to make the cigarette taste nicer, last longer and look better, and to make sure that nicotine reaches the brain as quickly as possible.
